Water treatment with zebra mussels in the Dutch Delta

Between 2001 and 2004 a project on the treatment of water with the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in the Volkerak-Zoommeer, in the Netherlands was carried out. This project was carried out in collaboration with TNO-MEP on behalf of the Dutch government (Rijkswaterstaat Zeeland).

This project aimed to calculate the level of water purification that could be achieved in this area using zebra mussels. The project setup included experiments into aspects of water treatment and water management.

The aim of the water management experiment was to determine whether the development of zebra mussels in this area could be encouraged by the addition of hard substrate and the potential effect on water quality. The water treatment experiment aimed to determine if zebra mussels could be used to filter nutrients from the rivers from Brabant and the effect on the nutrient load in the Volkerak-Zoommee.
