Urban development and the natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) - implementation of the Habitats Directive in the Netherlands

Natterjack toad

The natterjack toad is an internationally protected species and is listed in the Habitats Directive. In the Netherlands, the species is fairly common and often appears during urban development projects. In an article in Poceedings of the 13th Congress of the Societas Europaea Herpetologica the possibilities for integrating compensation measures into large-scale projects are outlined. Cleared areas in building projects can provide temporary areas for local populations, although the potential for conflict has led to such areas being closed to the species. The article provides a number of practical measures to handle urban populations, which aim to protect the natterjack toad during the most critical stages; those of construction.
