Studies into nitrogen

Nitrogen is released into the environment from road traffic, air traffic, agriculture and industry. This can either be dry or wet deposition in precipitation and can eventually lead to eutrophication. This can effect vegetation, plants and can also have a knock-on effect on birds and other animals. Some types of vegetation are sensitive to the additional deposition of nitrogen.

Important aspects for assessing Natura 2000 areas

Models can be used to asesses the size and scope for additional nitrogen deposition. A new activity can then be assessed in relation to the potential consequences for vegetation and ecosystems. Nitrogen is nowadays an important aspect of assessments of proposed activities on Natura 2000 sites.
