Natura 2000

Natura 2000

Natura 2000 sites

Natura 2000 sites form a network of protected areas across Europe. These sites are protected under European legislation and various national laws.

Natura 2000 and spatial planning

Developments in or near Natura 2000 sites need to be assessed for potential adverse effects on the nature of that area.

Usually, an exploratory study is carried out. If no adverse effects are foreseen then the development can proceed. If, however, adverse effects are expected, a license from the competent authority must be obtained. The competent authority is usually the local or national government. Applications usually include a compensation plan.

What can we do for you?

We can help with the initial survey as to the potential effects on Natura 2000 sites. We can also advise on measures to minimise the impacts and establish compensation plans.

Management plans for Natura 2000 sites

Bureau Waardenburg can provide specialist knowledge for use in the preparation of management plans for Natura 2000 sites. For example, in collaboration with Witteveen en Bos we provided important background documents used in the management of the Dutch Natura 2000 area Wieden and de Weerribben.
