EIAs for Offshore Wind Farms in the North Sea

The first offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, Offshore Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ), was constructed in 2006. We undertook a number of studies relating to the construction of this wind farm, including: the ecology section for the site selection (1997); the EIA for the location (1999/2000); and the EIA for the instillation (2003).

Following the licensing of OWEZ, and later the Prinses Amalia Wind Farm (Q7), the Dutch Government began the 'second round' for offshore wind farms in 2005. Between 2005 and 2008, we collaborated with IMARES and contributed to various ecological aspects of the EIAs, particularly for birds (effects and accumulative effects). We also supported the developers in discussions with the licensing authority. This ultimately led to us, along with a number of partners, contributing to the EIAs of a total of 19 wind farms.
