Vegetation research along roadside verges

Roadside verges can play an important role in the environment, namely providing habitat for both plants and animals. For many years, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS; the Dutch governmental body responsible for roads and verges) have carried out ecological management of roadside verges in the Netherlands. The effects of this management are not always clear and in 1999 RWS decided to establish a monitoring network for roadside verges. The monitoring network forms part of the Dutch National Ecological Monitoring Network (NEM).

Since 2000, Bureau Waardenburg has undertaken sampling across all physical-geographical regions in the Netherlands. In 2004, the sampling from all areas was complete and the entire dataset was analysed. In 2005, the second round of sampling began. Between 2008-2011, Bureau Waardenburg, has carried out the third round of sampling and the report will be available in 2012.
