Intertidal waterbirds in the Dutch Delta

Photo: Martin Bonte

The Dutch Delta holds important intertidal areas for waterbirds. Many of these areas are often alongside stretches of dykes that protect the land from flooding.

Bureau Waardenburg has carried out various projects that have involved mapping of birds along these dykes. Much of this work has been carried out in order to gain more knowledge about the processes at work along these dykes and neighbouring intertidal areas.

This research has been concentrated around the Wester- and Oosterschelde. During falling tide the use of the exposed intertidal areas by birds has been mapped in relation to the recreational use of these areas. The importance of these areas for foraging waterbirds, both during ebb and flood tides, is clear, but there is little known as to the possible effects of the use of the dykes close to these areas.
