Exotic species

Exotic or non-native species include those that are moved from their native areas to other areas by humans; either intentionally or unintentionally. In some cases these species then escape into the wild and breed. In the Netherlands, the number of exotic species has grown over the past few decades.
The presence of exotic species can have negative impacts on native species, biodiversity and may also have consequences for the economy and public safety. In order to prevent or limit the consequences of exotic species an early response is essential. Knowledge as to the potential risks can be assessed through a risk analysis, which forms the basis for prevention, management and control of exotic species.
