Ecological corridors

Fragmentation

Fragmentation is considered to be one of the main causes for the decline in biodiversity in the Netherlands. It is, therefore, necessary to recreate the spatial coherence between ecological systems, especially in areas where the existence of species are threatened.

Main Ecological Infrastructure

The Main Ecological Infrastructure, provides a coherent system of core areas and natural areas interconnected through ecological corridors. These ecological corridors can provide an important contribution to the process of defragmentation at the national scale.

Management Plans for Ecological Corridors

To ensure the best function, an ecological corridor must not only focus on ecology but also consider the values for the landscape and heritage, such as recreation and water features. The regional context, as well as technical aspects are of great importance and maintenance is carefully considered.
