Coral reef rehabilitation

One of our areas of work is assisting ecosystem recovery and researching methods to improve coral reef rehabilitation. Research on the sexual reproduction and aquaculture of juvenile corals by marine contractor Van Oord DMC, to which  our coral expert Miriam Schutter contributed in 2016, was recently described  in the journal of the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC). Also in 2017, Miriam, this time on behalf of Bureau Waardenburg, was involved in this study.

The article REEFGUARD: A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO ACTIVE REEF REHABILITATION is available through the website of IADC.

ReefGuard, which is part of the Coral Rehabilitation Initiative van Van Oord DMC, is an innovative mobile coral breeding facility.  During the yearly spawning (i.e. sexual reproduction) of corals, part of their gametes (read: reproductive cells) are caught with special spawning nets on the reef. These cells are fertilized in the laboratory and the resulting embryos are raised under controlled conditions in the ReefGuard until these small juvenile corals can be outplaced to the reef. The article provides insight in this method and described how it can be upscaled and applied to strengthen and rehabilitate coral reefs.
