Bescherming zwarte stern

Black Tern Research and Protection

Bureau Waardenburg is involved in research into the protection of black terns in the Netherlands. An important aspect of the work is in collecting data that can be directly used for the protection of the species.

Currently, this involves the creation of nest rafts and the monitoring of breeding success but the real challenges lie in improving the habitat to increase foraging success and reduce predation in the colonies.

We assist various agencies in the protection of this species and undertake the analysis of data gathered during the breeding season. This knowledge is then pooled and used to support the protection of both the peatlands and marshes vital to this species.
