Measures for Natterjack Toads and Sand Martins

The management of new areas for wildlife often revolves around grazing and mowing regimes. For several species that use pioneer habitats, such as Natterjack Toads and Sand Martins, more is needed. Often bare ground is covered with vegetation within a couple of years and these species have to search elsewhere.

Bureau Waardenburg has developed an area for nature that takes a different approach to management. As a result the first Sand Martins have already chosen it as their home.

A new habitat each year

At the core of the management plan are three sand heaps in which steep walls have been made. This provides the perfect opportunity for Sand Martins to nest. These sand areas also provide the perfect habitat for the Natterjack Toad and the adjacent pools are dug each year to ensure that these stay open.
