Collision rate modelling for wind farms

Bureau Waardenburg has a long history of assessing the potential effects of wind turbines on birds. Initial assessments can be made using mathematical models together with our extensive research expertise in this field. This experience includes field research using radar at numerous locations.



The collisions of birds with wind turbines is one of the key areas requiring consideration during the planning and construction of a wind farm. Predicting the potential number of collisions for specific species is frequently required in relation to regulations and permits, but can also help during the planning stage to lower the potential risks as well as for comparing different designs of wind farms or turbine models. Mathematical models have been developed to estimate the collision rates of birds with wind turbines. Bureau Waardenburg not only has a working knowledge of a number of these models, but also has a long involvement with the development of several of these models.

We have also applied the outcomes of collision rate models at the population level in an assessment of the cumulative effects of multiple offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

We have experience of applying standard collision rate models such as the SOSS Band model and Stochastic CRM, as well as selecting the most appropriate data and in interpreting results.

Besides collision rate modelling we have experience of assessing the potential impact on bird populations through population models.

Offshore wind farms

Since the early-1990s, Bureau Waardenburg has been involved with ecological research at onshore wind farms and since the late-1990s with offshore wind farms. Knowledge gained during field research connected to the first Dutch offshore wind farm led to involvement in the development of models for assessing collision rates in offshore wind farms. Between 2005-2008, Bureau Waardenburg was involved with collision rate modelling for 19 offshore wind farms as part of the EIA procedure.

More recently, we have been a secretariat partner on The Crown Estate's (UK) Strategic Ornithological Support Services (SOSS) group, which was involved with the development of a collision modelling tool specifically for offshore wind farms.

Since 2011, we have been involved with the analysis of offshore data and collision rate modelling for several planned wind farms in UK waters, including the Hornsea Round 3 site in the British North Sea and Neart na Gaoithe.
