Bureau Waardenburg is involved in research into and protection of Black Terns in the Netherlands. Projects in the breeding areas in the Netherlands, as well as projects abroad in the wintering areas, are part of our research (see further below). The collected information is used for species protection and management plans, with special emphasis on agricultural areas.

Black Tern habitat and population models
spacer
For the Dutch population Log-Linear models were constructed to analyse the historical population trend in different areas. For the Black Tern and other marshland bird species a HIS-model was set up to evaluate habitat management in marshlands and along open waters. Recently Bureau Waardenburg was involved in modelling the population development of the Black Tern. This population model is constructed with breeding success data from the period of 1992 to 2000 and is classified according to different types of surroundings. It is a stacked model, which can be used to evaluate different management activities, such as the provision of artificial rafts for breeding Black Terns.

Because of its expertise in tern research Bureau Waardenburg has been involved in projects outside the Netherlands. The black tern winters along the coasts of western and southern Africa.

In cooperation with several organisations (CEROE - Centre de Recherche Ornithologique et de l’Environnement, Benin, Ghana Wildlife Society, SOVON Dutch Centre for Ornithology, Wetlands International) three projects were carried out in Benin (2000) and Ghana (2002). In exchange, members of CEROE from Benin visited the Netherlands (2001).

The research projects in Benin and Ghana also have, apart from a scientific goal, a defined purpose in exchanging expertise and in capacity building. Activities in this field cover the development and application of a universal method of counting, behavioural studies, the ringing of birds and capacitiy building (e.g. in computer use and data analysis).
