Butterflies and dragonflies play a major role in our ecological research, and also in monitoring and effect studies, butterflies and dragonflies can play a major role. Our substantial ecological knowledge of these organisms enables us to teach courses on butterfly and dragonfly management, for example in urbanized environments.

The ecological knowledge of dragonflies and butterflies within Bureau Waardenburg is partly based on the evaluation of management practices. For example, there have been studies on the impact of the cleaning of waterways on dragonfly populations and the impact of roadside management on the presence of butterflies.

Dragonflies and butterflies often make up a substantial part of the diet of breeding marshland birds. Bureau Waardenburg conducts research into the relationship between changes in numbers and distribution of marshland birds, dragonflies and butterflies. These changes are then also related to the various management practices that have been in use at the respective locations.
