Fish monitoring

Various factors may contribute to the decline of fish populations, such asbad water quality, isolation within the area and lack of good management. These factors influence the possibilities of mating and migrating, which are of the utmost importance for the survival of fish populations. The decline of Dutch fish populations may also be caused by the introduction of exotic species. In Holland, the general picture of the past century shows an overall decrease of fish species diversity in all habitats, ranging from small ditches to large rivers, lakes and estuaries.

The topic of fish stock has gained a special status in the European Guidelines for Water. Fish stock monitoring is necessary in all freshwater and brackish ecosystems.

In recent years the Bureau has been involved in many long-term monitoring projects in fresh, brackish and salt water. These projects are often carried out in collaboration with professional fishermen. The type of fishing gear used is dependent on the fishing conditions and the target species. Several of our staff members are qualified to fish with electro equipment. Electro equipment facilitates fishing from (natural) riverbanks with vegetation and other obstacles. The composition of a population, its breeding success and growing conditions can all be assessed by measuring the length and weight of individual fish in the samples taken.
