Fish migration

An important prerequisite for the survival of fish populations is the possibility of migration. Obstacles in a waterway, like dams and weirs can seriously hinder a fish species in migrating to its mating or wintering grounds.

A gradual change from a freshwater to a saline environment is beneficial to fish populations, because it facilitates the exchange between the two. This is the natural situation, in which the migrating species, that are often critically rare nowadays, can establish themselves far upstream in the rivers.

Even in polders and rills, fish stock is often limited by the lack of migrating possibilities. Over the years Bureau Waardenburg has acquired a lot of expertise in all the different aspects of this matter.
