Bureau Waardenburg is actively involved in vegetation research, commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, district water boards, nature conservation agencies, provincial and municipal governments. Areal surveys and monitoring programmes are conducted to observe the developments in aquatic and terrestrial vegetation. Projects are carried out in rural as well as urban areas, in freshwater, brackish and saline environments.

For vegetation mapping, aerial photographs (false colour) are used. Bureau Waardenburg has ample experience in interpreting stereoscopically aerial photography of different scales and in digitally processing the outlines to come to a final vegetation map.

Currently Bureau Waardenburg is involved in setting up and carrying out a monitoring programme for roadside vegetation consisting of 1600 Permanent Quadrats. These are spread out over the country and are part of a national flora monitoring programme.
