Underwater research

Some research projects benefit from literally taking a look underneath the water surface. Bureau Waardenburg has several professional divers at its disposal. These divers have an extensive expertise in underwater research. The employment of these divers is a guarantee to get a quick and accurate impression of the submerged ecosystem. Underwater observations (if necessary, combined with various sampling techniques) give an accurate idea of the conservation status of the ecosystem and can be used to reveal trends in biodiversity and changes in biomass. Bureau Waardenburg has conducted this kind of research both in the Netherlands and abroad. During these projects video equipment and cameras are used, so that the results can be re-examined afterwards. Apart from the videos made during biological surveys and experiments, Bureau Waardenburg has produced approximately 15 underwater videos for educational purposes.

Research in the Netherlands
Research in the Netherlands consists of both surveys and experiments and takes place both in fresh water lakes (like Volkerak- Zoommeer and Asseltse plassen) and in marine tidal water systems (like the North Sea, the Wadden Sea and the southern Delta area).

Fresh water
  • Experiment: water purifying capacity of the Zebra mussel in the Volkerak-Zoommeer (project runs until 2004).
Marine water
  • Monitoring of artificial reefs in the North Sea (1992, 1993 en 2001).
  • The state of the natural environment and fisheries in Slaak, Zijpe and Krabbenkreek (2000).

Research abroad

Bureau Waardenburg has expertise in coral reef research (mainly of the Caribbean and the Red Sea). We can conduct both surveys and experiments, e.g. we carry out coral transplants in order to recover the reef, we colour coral to determine its growth speed and we study the behaviour of fish in accordance with behaviour protocol.

  • Cendrawasih -, Pulau -, Wasur Management plan, Indonesia (1993)
  • Base-line ecological study of Lac on Bonaire (1993)
  • Final report Marine tourism Development Plan for Indonesia (1988)
  • Jubail Sea Water Park (1982)

Underwater video for educational purposes
spacer
After many years of underwater research, many videos and photographs have been produced for educational purposes. The bureau supplies both raw material and complete videos. Sometimes our expertise in underwater registration is put to quite a different purpose. Once Bureau Waardenburg made a video of the national swimming team.

  • Underwater filming of fish for an educational video for the district water board of Hunze & AA’s (2002)
  • Underwater filming for an educational video on muskrat control for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery (1996)
  • Underwater filming and editing the video ‘The Eastern Scheldt underwater’ for the Eastern Scheldt educational centre Neeltje Jans (1993)
