Ecological transition zones

Fragmentation of natural habitats is considered to be one of the major causes of the decline in biodiversity of plants and animals. Resolving the problems around fragmentation requires the development of a spatial relationship between ecosystems in areas in which endangered species occur. In The Netherlands, the Ecological Network provides a range of interrelated core areas and areas in which nature is being protected and restored. These are located in a network of ecological corridors. The establishment of ecological corridors makes a significant contribution to the defragmentation of natural habitats in the Netherlands.

A good design for ecological transition zones should not only focus on ecology, but should also take into account the cultural and historical significance of the area, its potential for recreation and other functions, such as water management and agriculture. During this process the regional context of a transition zone is also of great importance. Technical aspects, such as management and maintenance are examined carefully. Bureau Waardenburg values a thorough interdisciplinary approach.
